The Company
Our client is a leading provider to Kiwis all over New Zealand, whether it be providing large-scale corporate insurance schemes, general SME cover or individual insurance, our client offers a comprehensive and innovative suite of products. Based in the CBD, with about 200 staff, they operate in a highly regulated environment and are going through a transformational period to enhance their service and product to its customers, as well as modernising their internal systems for efficiency purposes.
The Position
This role is for a 5+ year PQE lawyer (those more senior seeking a level of flexibility are also of interest) with a strong background in corporate and commercial legal matters to join a progressive team as they continue to lead the way in the insurance industry. As in-house Counsel, there would be a level of flexibility to scope the role towards your interests where you would advise on range of commercial legal matters including: commercial contract drafting, technology, privacy, insurance claims, interpretation and policy review, data and outsourcing agreements, corporate support on transactions, corporate governance & regulation. As part of a legal team of 5, you would collaborate with colleagues on a daily basis on a variety of legal issues but will also be able to operate with a good level of autonomy. You will report into a General Counsel with a wealth of knowledge about the industry and the company you work, as well as someone that can provide good leadership and mentorship in the role.
Your broader role includes strategically partnering with internal stakeholders and business units to understand their commercial drivers and provide pragmatic advice that is also legally sound. It's important that you can therefore quickly establish rapport and credibility with a variety of people and gain an understanding of the context in which you're carrying out the work. You'd work with external law firms as required on matters that require specialist support and based on internal capacities too.

- 5+ years PQE with a background in corporate and commercial law with strong contract drafting and advice skills is key;
- A background within a top-tier or well-regarded commercial law team - ideally with some in-house legal or secondment experience;
- Previous in-house legal experience within insurance, financial services or a larger organisation would be preferred but isn't necessary;
- Strong communication skills with the ability to influence and guide internal and external stakeholders on commercial matters; an
- A naturally commercial mindset with the ability to think strategically and pragmatically.
