Job description

About the Organisation:

This role is with a well-established organisation that has been a household name in the tourism sector for many years.

As they continue to expand their transport operations and broader services within the community, you will be coming in at an exciting time of growth with the borders re-opening and tourism humming again. In this role, you will play an integral role in providing legal advice on environmental and commercial project work they have on the go.

The Opportunity:

Hitting the ground running, you will act as sole Legal Counsel reporting to the Chief Commercial Officer and working closely with the leadership team as well as key external stakeholders such as local Councils, Auckland Transport and Conservation Groups to provide strategic and legal support to a wide variety of functions. These functions include commercial contracting, marketing, resource management, corporate governance, policy and regulatory related matters amongst other project work E.g. Sustainability and new build projects. There would be a level of flexibility to scope the role towards your areas of interest and expertise. You will still have the ability to rely on external counsel as needed, particularly on specialist points of the law.

The team is down to earth and operate with a collabrative and flat structured working environment. There is good inbuilt flexibility with the option for staff to work from home 2 days a week. With a month's handover from the current Senior Legal Counsel, the support of the direct team as well as access to additional support from external Lawyers, you will have ample support networks in place to help you succeed in the role.

The ideal person will have:
  • 8+ years PQE in one or two of the following relevant areas: commercial law and contracting work, resource management and/or public law law.
  • A background within a large firm, ideally with in-house or secondment experience or experience within a varied commercially focused role in-house;
  • Strong commercial acumen with the ability to build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders;
  • Pragmatism to apply the law to a business understanding its risk profile and helping to achieve commercial objectives; and
  • Ability to hold a current NZ Practicing certificate.
This contract opportunity may suit you if you've recently returned to NZ from overseas, returning to work after a career break or parental leave (and perhaps wanting flexiblity in a role), or you're curious to move into an in-house legal environment and this gives you the opportunity to see how you'd fit into a varied in-house legal role.

With the organsiation growing, there is possibility for the role to become permanent in future depending on needs at that time.

Ideally applicants must be available for a start date between the 1st-15th September 2022 to allow for a suitable handover.
