Job description
If you’re ready for a senior role where you’ll work closely with high-profile partners, lead matters, and help shape the next generation of lawyers, this role could be the next step you’ve been looking for.
This is a chance to join a well-resourced national commercial team, supported by junior lawyers across all offices. Much of your work will focus on drafting and negotiating complex commercial contracts, everything from supply and distribution agreements through to outsourcing, procurement, and strategic partnerships. You’ll also be involved in corporate advisory matters and M&A transactions, giving you exposure to a broad mix of high-value work.
You might already be in private practice and ready to step up, or you might be working in-house and looking to return to practice to build a clear progression pathway.
Why you’ll enjoy it here:
- A national firm with a strong client base and reputation for quality work.
- A collaborative culture where people share knowledge and opportunities.
- Flexibility, including 1 day a week WFH.
- Access to well-resourced teams so you can focus on the work you enjoy most.
- Opportunities for client secondments, mentoring, and leadership.
People here value relationships, trust, and getting the job done without unnecessary drama. They look after each other, back good ideas, and give you the tools and autonomy to make your role your own. Work/life balance is respected; when you’re off the clock, you’re off.
The role as 2IC to the lead partners, you’ll:
- Work on complex commercial contracting work, from major supply deals through to services and distribution arrangements.
- Advise on corporate advisory matters, governance, and transactions.
- Play a key role in M&A deals, from due diligence to completion.
- Lead and mentor junior lawyers.
- Build and maintain strong client relationships.
- Contribute to business development and strategic direction alongside the partners.
- NZ qualified & admitted lawyer
- 7+ years PQE in a reputable firm or organisation
- Strong drafting and negotiation skills.
- Confident in leading files and managing client relationships.
- Experience mentoring or supervising junior lawyers.
- NZ qualified and admitted.
- Flexible working options and 1 day WFH.
- Birthday leave, paid parental leave top-ups, marriage leave, and long service leave.
- Professional development support and study assistance.
- Health and well-being initiatives, including EAP access, free flu vaccinations, discounted medical insurance, and standing desks.
- A lively social calendar, sports teams, and a subsidised social club.
- Complimentary barista coffee, fruit, and Friday drinks.
