Flexible working in the legal sector

Flexible working is becoming more common across many industries, rather than being viewed as a benefit it is becoming an expectation from candidates. The Ministry of Busines Innovation and Employment estimates that approximately 50% of workers now have flexibility in their work arrangements. The recent New Zealand lockdowns and current Level 3 Auckland is operating under has once again shifted the landscape for remote working, from being viewed as a benefit to often an unwelcome necessity. Within the legal sector remote working poses several additional challenges to consider, these include;

  • Security measures to protect client information, including data and network security

  • Ability to conduct confidential and private discussions within a home environment

  • Access to safe file storage such as a fire rated safe

  • Supervision of employees - law firms have a duty to supervise employees performing legal or legal support work

We have seen our legal clients quickly adapt to operating under a remote working environment with robust systems in place, advanced technology and regular communication a key to success. We have seen employers offer a health and well-being day for staff, care packages and dessert treats to help staff with mental health and staying motivated through this period.

What has your employer done that you've appreciated during this Level 3 and Lockdown period?
