Job description

About the firm & opportunity

If you are a passionate litigator and are looking for a role where the impact of your work is tangible and enhances your community and affected cultural groups, this is the opportunity for you.

We are working with a specialist litigation practice, based in South Auckland, that is recruiting for additional lawyers due to growth in work. Working in a team of about 25, with a mix of seniors and juniors, the firm works on matters such as:
  • Treaty-related claims before the Maori Land Court and Waitangi Tribunal,
  • Public law and policy matters,
  • Marine and Coastal Area applications
  • Resource management issues, acting for iwis and Maori litigants.
It's an interesting area of work involving social justice issues and an opportunity to hone your legal research, drafting and advocacy skills in this field.

There is the ability to spend some time working from home, so if the location is a consideration, the firm is fully supportive of some flexible working arrangements as it makes sense around team and client meetings.

About you:
  • 3-6 years PQE for the intermediate position.
  • 7+ years PQE for the senior position.
  • A relevant legal background in civil litigation or a barristerial environment and have a keen interest in building your skills in this work (if you don't have directly relatable experience).
  • A demonstrable interest in public law, Maori law and policy matters;
  • An interest in developing your litigation and advocacy skills, with the ability to problem-solve, take initiative and represent clients in court. There is the chance to get your time in the Waitangi Tribunal, Maori Land Court and advocate in negotiation meetings with clients.
  • Ideally you'll be in a role where you've had exposure to mentoring juniors to some degree and you'll have the support of a team around you in the role.
Perhaps you have built up good litigation skills but are looking to pursue an area you'd feel more passionate about or to take your skills into an environment where you can work on Maori legal issues and RMA related work. Either way, get in touch with us to find out more about this position.
